Does the sound distorting and fading out after long periods of high volume play mean there is something wrong?
Hey everybody, I have a new Kenwood KDC-HD545U installed in my ’97 Lincoln towncar, bought the stereo from Brandsmart and had it installed by them, it always seems that after i play it loud for like 2 or 3 songs the sound will tend to distort and fade out as if the system is shutting down and if i turn it down for a couple minutes, its back to normal unless i turn it up again for a few minutes then it distorts again, my car came with the jbl audio package so i have a factory amp, dont know how many watts it is though and i have all aftermarket speakers, 2 kenwoods in the front and 2 in the back all hooked up, i have read somewhere on the net before that you could correct the issue by installing an amp or that only non-excelon kenwood units have this issue, but i have not been able to find that info again, i just need some help in knowing if there is a problem with my head unit or not and how would i be able to resolve this issue, any help would be appreciated
First thing is eliminate variables, try hooking the deck directly to a test speaker and try to duplicate the problem. A deck overdriving the amp causes clipping if input gain is too high and if the amp is at peak output the THD (total harmonic distortion) increases over whole frequency spectrum. Check the spec’s and look at the THD % for both amp and deck. The reason it sounds better is because the THD level decreases according to power level exponentially. Another reason for distortion is lack of a low pass, mid range, and high pass filter. Used to only allow specific frequency to pass for that type of speaker. Better to have the filter before the amp and then send to speakers. To make the most of your system, knowing the resistance of each speaker and then wire them for the rating of your amp. For example your amp is 2 ohm stable then you wire two four ohm speakers in parallel, by starting with ground wire on amp to ground wire of first speaker then same wire to ground of second speaker. second wire on hot side of second speaker to hot of first to hot of amp and that is one channel. Do not do this if amp is not 2 ohm stable. A true professional should know all this and be able to get it fixed for you.
