Looking at purchasing a new stand mixer. Does a higher watt motor necessarily mean it’s a better mixer?
I make lots of cakes for weddings and birthdays etc…I had a sunbeam stand mixer (450 watt motor), but I’ve managed to strip the gears on one side…probably from overuse? Dunno, anyway I’ve been looking at kitchen aids but they only seem to have about a 325 watt motor, while the kenwood mixer’s I’ve looked at have 1000-1200 what motors. Of course that would mean they’re stronger, am I right? What other factors are more important that watts? They all seem to have somewhat similar features as far as planetary movement and litre capacity of the bowl and attachments… Thanks for your help!
There’s nothing to guarantee that a mixer with a higher wattage motor is a better mixer. But if they wanted to cut corners, a smaller motor would probably be one of the first ways. A stronger motor can handle thicker foods, such as bread dough, without overheating or suffering as much damage in other ways. They’ll generally have stronger gears, etc. This isn’t to say that they wouldn’t put a stronger motor into a weaker mixer but in general they wouldn’t. Why save $2.00 on gears when you can save $7.00 on a motor, or whatever the difference would be.
In addition to a stronger motor you’d want metal gears, not plastic. A stronger base, better accessories like dough hooks and batter whisks. Actual bearings instead of bushings. Ask questions and read the box and brochures carefully. I’m sure there’s things I haven’t mentioned.

where is the best place to buy a kenwood food mixer?

ebay would be your best bet and if it brand new then you will have a mandatory one year manufacturers warranty with it, but check postage costs as these can sometimes be far too high £15 – £20 should be about right.
If you want to buy one from a shop then go to john lewis, they are without a doubt the best and always try to have the lowest prices.
By the way I can’t wait to get my hands on one too, they really are the best mixers in the world, happy baking
